Actualidad, Novedades Institucionales
In 2018, from Shalom Bait, we developed the Guidance Guide for making a complaint of Gender Violence in the City of Buenos Aires, in printed and digital format, with the aim of providing practical advice and clear explanations that, based on our experience , we consider necessary, to make a complaint for gender violence.
This year we went one step further and carried out, together with the Argentine Library for the Blind, the Audio-Guide version to expand access to this material to women with visual disabilities and all those people who, for different reasons, cannot read it in their print or digital version.
Women with visual disabilities are faced with the same problems as all women, but our society is not yet sufficiently sensitized and trained to respond to the particular needs of this group. We believe that it is urgent that they have the possibility of accessing all the information, and that this is not an impediment when asking for help, making a report and looking for a way out of gender violence.
WHY AN AUDIO GUIDE?
By Lucía Torres, Carolina Buceta and Andrea Grassia, from the Board of Directors of the Argentine Library for the Blind.
“When last year they wrote to us from Shalom Bait to ask us about the accessibility of the guide for making complaints about gender violence, some members of the Argentine Library for the Blind had gone through the experience of making a judicial complaint a few months ago. for a case of street harassment in the vicinity of the institution. Unfortunately, when we had to expand the complaint for a new episode perpetrated by the same subject against one of our colleagues from the library, the prosecution staff referred her to the Office of Domestic Violence of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, but In that agency it was not appropriate to make complaints for this type of incident.
For this reason, it seems essential that people with visual disabilities have an audio guide in simple language that explains the steps to follow for those women who need to report a situation of gender violence. If the moment of making a complaint for violence is traumatic for every woman, for those of us who are blind or have low vision, it can be even more so if we do not have the appropriate information. It is important to mention that in a public office, people with visual disabilities require the help of an employee to guide us to the place where we must do the procedure, so it is essential that we know which department we have to go to, to avoid new situations like the ones we experienced last year.
At a time of great emotional upheaval, the act of moving from one facility to another due to not having received advice to make a report is a frustrating experience.
That is why we appreciate and support this initiative that takes into account our needs as women with disabilities ”.
